Fan Fictions

This is a fascinating genre that often receives an undeservedly rough reputation. The term 'fan fiction' may suggest to you a bunch of obsessed and wacky novices pouring out stories that ooze with gratuitous detail. This shortsighted assumption may blind us to a myriad of polished and famous examples which have been enjoyed by discerning readers for decades.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary simply defines it as, 'stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the internet.' I'd define it as a wealth of stories derived from other celebrated or well-known sources. When another author's work is used as a springboard for something new and original, that's fan fiction.

I invite you to begin with my overview about the broad scope of fan fiction, in which I discuss several reasons why authors may choose to write fan fiction at all, along with different stylistic examples of what may comprise fan fiction.

My own awakening started during 2020 when I first came across the Archive of Our Own (AO3) community devoted to fan fictions. Devouring some wonderful stories by avid fans helped fill those quiet moments during the Pandemic. I itched to have a try myself, but didn't take the plunge until the latter half of 2023. At the very outset, I was added to a waiting list of hopeful authors, and with something like 12 000 others ahead of me, my opportunity came after about six weeks. That virtual waiting room alone reinforced how compelling and addictive this creative outlet must be.

Since I was given the thumbs up, I've been hooked. Fan fiction has given me back my mojo! Way back in the early 2000s I used to write my own original fiction, but had long ago ticked off all of my ideas. Colouring in between the gaps of wonderful old classics, adopting my favourite characters, plunging into other time periods while remaining true to canon has positively been a blast. During the last ten months, I've written something like 110 000 words, which amazes me. Sticking to a weekly schedule in the spirit of Dickens himself has been fantastic fun.

This page is for providing links to my own (free) stories as well as listing those of others in one spot. If running your eyes down my list leaves an agreeable impression, that's my aim.
