A lot of the movie was filmed in towns near us, so I feel obligated. :)jugglingpayneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10921293051956441475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-65101308062787232932016-09-19T16:20:55.764+10:002016-09-19T16:20:55.764+10:00Tully instantly said you missed Narnia, but I see ...Tully instantly said you missed Narnia, but I see Jeanette picked that up. And I'm surprised Emma didn't add the Divergent series when I ran the list past her. I'll have to tell her that :) And that sad part of The Book Thief too. There are loads, aren't there? I'm glad I threw this open. There'll probably be enough for a second post.Paula Vincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02079952414990463270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-46235736827079277602016-09-19T13:27:28.364+10:002016-09-19T13:27:28.364+10:00Tully instantly said you missed Narnia, but I see ...Tully instantly said you missed Narnia, but I see Jeanette picked that up. I did the Ghan in 1986, and wish I could do it again. There's also the Overland Express between Adelaide and Melbourne, but we all consider that one reasonably short. As a 13 yr old I was one of 3 classmates who took the 6am train from KIngston SE on the old narrow gauge for a day trip to Naracoorte, returning on the evening train. What wonderful and safe freedoms we enjoyed in those days!Rhonda Pooley - Writerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18267933289137123263noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-81103091816106891702016-09-19T09:41:21.484+10:002016-09-19T09:41:21.484+10:00Hi Jenny,

Thanks for picking up on examples which are more 'grown up' and chilling, you might say, than several of mine, and definitely deserve to be up there. Old Russian literature stands to reason, since train travel was a necessity in their time and place.

I have good memories of several train journeys too, mostly around Australia. One that stands out is the Ghan, from Adelaide to Alice Springs, when I was a teenager. Sitting in the dining car having breakfast with the red desert as a view was fantastic. We have an old steam train called the Steam Ranger here in the Adelaide Hills, which does day trips to the coast. And we went on the Kuranda steam train during our recent holiday in Cairns. The fact that these are all so popular with tourists shows the appeal rail travel still has.Paula Vincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02079952414990463270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-90468972641686163322016-09-19T09:10:37.978+10:002016-09-19T09:10:37.978+10:00Hi Paula

Train journey's form a part of my childhood - whether it was the Inlander from Townsville to Mt Isa, or our train journey from Durban, South Africa to Kitwe, Zambia with old world service and African views - or the train journey from Brisbane to Melbourne - or even just an exciting ride on the Puffing Billy in Melbouren or the train from Cairns to Karanda past the Baron Falls. So sad that train travel is now often more expensive than flying.

As I read your article, I immediately thought of a couple of episodes of Doctor Who that occur on trains (on other planets or space-trains) but then epic scenes from Doctor Zhivago and Anna Karenina - or the terrible journey to Auschwitz came to mind. And then there are the train journeys at the start of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and The Last Battle in the Narnia series.

I think you may how found a rich vein to mine :)Jeanette O'Haganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11057798704247611224noreply@blogger.com
