Because as you say, if it thawed and re-froze at all, it could've been terrible 🤢

I once saw a photo from then of how badly the tracks were snowed in. It was unbelievable to see. As a child, I loved this book more than any of them. The thought of being snowed in all winter seemed dreamy to me. As a mother, it scared the you-know-what out of me. There were a few times I thought, yeah, Ma is scared right now. She had to have been so worried for her family. I think about them eating that turkey that spring, after it sat on the train all those months so often! Even if it was frozen, shipping a turkey like that is so bizarre to me. Times have definitely changed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-8831662763826125642020-12-23T08:28:12.738+11:002020-12-23T08:28:12.738+11:00Yeah, both those things are true in retrospect. Almanzo choosing to risk his life rather than sell his wheat, and then pressure someone into doing what he refuses to, is a bit of a head scratcher for some 😉 And it sure is another of many examples of Charles Ingalls' questionable lack of judgement. He did reason that he surely wouldn't have enough to feed the town until the end of winter, but it's still surprising that he wouldn't consider trying first rather than risking his life. The word reckless does spring to mind. We can celebrate that it worked out well, but the story could have so easily been different.Paula Vincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02079952414990463270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-86448697044137694862018-07-10T02:32:45.292+10:002018-07-10T02:32:45.292+10:00Oh, yeah, I think Laura had a crush on Cap. ; )
...Oh, yeah, I think Laura had a crush on Cap. ; )

I thought about Mrs. Garland giving permission to Cap to go on such a venture, too. That whole trip was outrageous, I think, especially given that Almanzo had a whole wall full of wheat to feed the town. At that point, it doesn't matter that its your seed wheat. They risked their lives to go buy someone else's. I just didn't think it was such a wise venture. Even Pa could have killed his cow to provide meat for his family. Why did he wait so long? It wasn't like they were getting milk! I don't know. That's my 21st century brain, I suppose.

Nonetheless, so many great lessons come out of this one. That particular winter put up such a good fight ;) And that same proverb about necessity being the mother of invention sprang to my mind too. It's not always done well, but when it is... hoo boy! I go ga-ga for it :) Also, I love how you highlighted their little MacGyver methods for generating light and heat - necessity is the mother and all that... :DSheree @ Keeping Up With The Penguinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09387035714160789080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-61267689460938027852018-06-19T19:59:48.064+10:002018-06-19T19:59:48.064+10:00Oh wow, that's a lovely bit of encouragement. ...Oh wow, that's a lovely bit of encouragement. I'll pop over and have a look :) Reviewing classics is fun, and so is sharing it. And about the Little House books, the best part is that they're written in such a way we can enjoy them at any age.
