But like many others, I really was impressed, and look forward to seeing what you have to say down the track :D That book itself was such a huge kick in the pants!! I've had this book lingering on my shelf for a while (a Collins Classic edition, nowhere near as beautiful as yours), but I've put off reading it for the exact same reasons that you did. And you've just given me the kick in the bum I needed! We have a responsibility I think, not to look away, especially when the ramifications of the past are still felt so strongly today. Wonderful write up, thankyouthankyouthankyou ❤️Sheree @ Keeping Up With The Penguinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09387035714160789080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-22170897068241046722019-08-26T17:39:18.179+10:002019-08-26T17:39:18.179+10:00Hi Brian, it's enough to astound 21st century ...Hi Brian, it's enough to astound 21st century readers for sure, especially since the times were so relatively recent. It really is an excellent read, with happy endings for some. And it's hard to believe, but she even managed to slip a bit of comic relief in there at times. Covering it up is shortsighted and I believe harmful.

Superb review of a difficult book. The dilapidated state of your old one must show what a favourite it is.

Yes, HBS really made her passion clear in that last chapter, when she said all those things about not sitting around letting injustice play out around us. Your review was one that made put this book on my reading list, and now I'll be recommending it a lot too.Paula Vincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02079952414990463270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533677737021490096.post-87199883063479892992019-08-26T06:29:57.281+10:002019-08-26T06:29:57.281+10:00AMEN! Thank you!!!!
First of all, that is a beaut...AMEN! Thank you!!!!

First of all, that is a beautiful edition...and b/c I love this book so much, I should consider buying a new copy, such as this one. My current copy is defaced.

Of course, I completely agree with you about our modern sensibilities overly correcting our past by eliminating the horrors. We are so foolish. UTC can teach us so much, not only about the past, but also about ourselves.

Finally, one of my favorite arguments in the book is Stowe's proclamation of the Christian church - its silence and inaction on the matter of slavery. She really went off at the end. I loved it. Of course, a large portion of the Christian church did speak out against slavery, but not all did.

I'm so glad you liked this book and that you had the response you did. I feel the same way every time I read it. I wish more people read it.Ruth @ with freedom and bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15531827758868215023noreply@blogger.com
